Current Local and International Airlines in Nigeria


Nigeria has many number of airports with so many airlines operating there.  Some of them are operating on local or domestic services only and some of them are operating both domestic and international services.

An airline is a company that provides air transport services for traveling passengers and freight. Airlines utilize aircraft to supply these services and may form partnerships or alliances with other airlines for code-share agreements. Generally, airline companies are recognized with an air operating certificate or license issued by a governmental aviation body.

First below are the current local airlines in Nigeria.

  • Arik Air is one of the most prominent airlines in Nigeria handling both domestic, regional and international flights. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos are the two main hubs that the airline uses. It was founded in 2002. Arik Air is networked to cover Nigeria and a few West African countries.
  • Aero Contractors, popularly known as 'aero', is a Nigerian airline with its hub in Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. It handles domestic and international flights, third party aircraft operations, and air charter. Aero Contractors' uniqueness lies in the fact that it has two wings. The Fixed Wing used for scheduled passenger services in Nigeria and West Africa, and the Rotary Wing, for the helicopter services for oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
  • IRS Airlines: A limited liability company established in March 2002, IRS Airlines is based in Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, Nigeria, which covers a fairly wide range of domestic flights and destinations including Abuja, Akwa Ibom, Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Jos, Calabar, Maiduguri. Aside from very high safety records, their services are quite flexible as flight ticket, flight schedule and online booking reservation can be done online without any restrictions.
  • Air Nigeria: The national flag carrier airline came up to replace 'Nigeria Airways'.It handles scheduled regional and domestic passenger services. Its hub is at the Murtala Mohammed International airport, Lagos. Its registered office is in Ikoyi, Lagos, while its head office is on the 9th floor of Etiebet's Place in Ikeja, Lagos.
  • Air Peace Airways is a private Nigerian airline based in Lagos. It has seven aircrafts. 3 state of the art Dornier 328 Jets and 4 Boeing 737-500 SP jets. They have very affordable fares hereby attracting a lot of travelers.
  • Overland airways is Lagos-based airline. It handles domestic services from Lagos and Ibadan. It has two hubs, the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The MMIA is its main hub. Overland Airways flies to 5 domestic destinations, and maintains a fleet of 6 air crafts.
  • Dana Air, Lagos based, flies to 5 domestic destinations . Its fleetincludes 4 McDonnell Douglas. The domestic destinations it covers are; Abuja, Lagos, Calabar, Port Harcourt, and Uyo.

Air France is an international airline belonging to the French government.  They have so many aircrafts in their care. Their aircrafts are divided into long haul fleet, medium haul fleet, regional fleet and cargo fleet. The airline travel to many cities across the world, including Lagos.
Head office is located at rue de Paris and they are undauntedly one of the best the world had ever seen.  At their lounge, they have various services they provide to their passengers, like anti-stress center, vaccination center and many others.

KLM is an international airline. It is owned by the Dutch government and it was founded on the 7th of October 1919.  Purpose of its establishment was to serve the people of Netherlands.  Since its inception till date, the airline had never changed its name; it is still operating under its name, KLM since it was founded in 1919 till date. They however merged with Air France in 2004 to form Air France KLM. The two had been together since then till now.  The airline belongs to the KLM group and it actually forms the core of the group.

Delta airlines They started operation on the 30th of May, 1924.  Former name of the company was Huff daland Dusters. Actual flight operation started on the 17th of June, 1929. The airline operates from a number of locations, like Amsterdam airport Schiphol, Charles de Gaulle airport, Cincinatti Northern Kentucky International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Others are John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Logan International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, Narita International Airport, Salt Lake City International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Raleigh-Durham International Airport is their main focus. Emirate is yet another foreign airline with operation in Nigeria.  The airline plies more than 150 destinations across the globe. Some of their destinations include Dubai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and so on. The airline operates economy class, business class   and first class. Their rates are also highly affordable. Customer service is also one of the best in the world. They travel to 38 locations in Africa, 28 locations in Middle East and 98 locations in Asia & Pacific.

Bellview Airline This is undoubtedly one of the best in the world while it held sway. It began operation in 1992. It is however unfortunate that it has ceased from operation since 2009.  It operated from Murtala Muhammed International Airport and the airline has up to 13 aircrafts in its fleet.Their website is www.flybellviewair.com.  It was operating then as Bellview Travels Limited. It had its base in Lagos, Nigeria.  The airline operated both domestic and international. Bellview however plans to come back into the market and it is planning to liaise with the British Airways to provide top class services to its teeming passengers.

Qatar Airway This is yet another international airline operating in Nigeria. The company belongs to the Qatar government and it has proved to be one of the best in the world over the years. Qatar airways ply a number of  routes and destination, Ras Al Khaimah in UAE, Sydney in Australia, Boston in USA, Birmingham in UK, Adelaide in Australia, Yerevan in Armenia, Atlanta in USA, Marrakech in Morocco, Pisa in Italy, Windhoek in Namibia, Helsinki in Finland, Krabi in Thailand and Seychelles  In addition, the airline plans to add more routes, like Auckland in New Zealand, Skopje in Macedonia, Sarajevo in Bosnia, Nice in France, Douala in Cameroon, Libreville in Gabon and Lusaka in Zambia.
